The Differences in Disney Resort Categories

by Casey Morris on March 9, 2016

Did you know that Disney has over 20 resorts on property? All of these resorts are divided into 4 different categories based on amenities, bed size, room size, etc. Each of the resorts in each category will be similarly priced for the standard rooms, but will vary greatly when you consider all of the room upgrade options that some resorts offer. We created this chart for a quick comparison, but read on below to discover more information as well as links to information about every resort.

resort categories

We highly recommend to stay at least in a moderate if you can financially swing it. We feel that this just enhances what is already going to be a magical vacation. While we do recommend this, we are also aware that not everyone has that in the budget. If you do not, it is totally okay! You are still going to have a fabulous vacation, and we will be sure of that!

Here is a list of each category, along with every resort within those categories. The resorts listed are links that you can discover more information, pictures and even videos at each location to help you determine which option best fits your family, so be sure to click on the ones that interest you the most!

Value

This category has 5 resort options. Each resort we call “cartoon-ish” due to them having statues of characters as tall as the buildings (which the kids tend to love, by the way). Our favorite by far in this category is Art of Animation, followed by All Star Movies (personal preference).

Moderate

This category also has 5 resort options. These resorts have more lush landscaping, better food options and a much more upgraded feel versus the values. The cost difference is not huge to upgrade to moderate, especially for the standard room pricing. Our favorite in this category, by a small margin is Port Orleans Riverside, closely followed by Caribbean Beach (again, personal preference).

Deluxe

This category boasts 8 different resorts, more than any other category. Every resort in this category provides either walking distance to a park, or water transportation/monorail to a park, except Animal Kingdom Lodge. Due to AKL being the only Deluxe that only offers bus transportation, the price to stay there is considerably less than the other Deluxe resorts. If you are tight on budget but would love the quality of a Deluxe, we recommend AKL, especially since often times their discounts are phenomenal there.

Deluxe Villa

There are only 2 resorts in this category. They both only offer Villa’s, but what is called a “studio villa” is basically like a standard room at a Deluxe resort. In addition to these two resorts offering 1, 2 and 3 bedroom Villas, so does every Deluxe resort as well, just ask for quoting!
